Your local Red Cross chapter serves Floyd, Johnson, Martin, Magoffin, Pike, Letcher, Knott, Leslie & Harlan counties.

The chapter service area covers a total of over 248,000 citizens in its chapter area.

The chapter provides:

• Shelter to families who have become homeless due to a house fire, flood, storm or other disaster.

• Clothing to family members who may have lost everything during the event of the disaster. (Each family member is provided with enough money for two changes of clothing)

• Food is provided for the family to eat during the first week following the disaster.

• Comfort Kits are provided for the family. (Each family member is provided a comfort kit. This kit contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, a wash cloth, a comb, mouthwash, shampoo, a box of feminine hygiene products, a razor, shaving cream, and soap.)(A coloring book and crayons is included in a child’s comfort kit, and when available, a stuffed animal is given to children under 8 yrs old.)

• Money can be used for diapers and gasoline if the family feels they need to use the money for these expenses.

Every dollar of assistance given must be generated through donations from the area. If a general donation is given to the American Red Cross and not designated to be given to the local chapter, those donations must be given to the National Chapter for disaster response.

Your Red Cross has touched the lives of millions of people affected by disastrous circumstances. Whether around the world, around the nation, or in our local community, comfort and support have been extended to families and individuals hard hit by both large and very personal disasters.

Compassion and generosity have allowed the Red Cross to reach people with food, shelter and comfort during serious emergencies in their lives - including the floods that hit our own community last spring. The work of the Red Cross has never been more relevant.
